What to Do If Your Google Business Profile Gets Suspended (and How to Avoid It)
If your business relies on local customers—whether you're a roofer, lawyer, or dentist—a Google Business Profile suspension can hurt. Badly.
Why This Matters
If your business relies on local customers—whether you’re a roofer, lawyer, or dentist—a Google Business Profile suspension can hurt. Badly.
Among the things you might notice:
- Fewer calls and quote requests
- A significant drop in web traffic
- Lost revenue (from customers who simply can’t find you)
And here’s the most frustrating part: suspensions happen often, even to legitimate businesses that haven’t broken any rules, or didn’t even know they did.
Here’s some good news, though: Google Business Profile Suspensions are avoidable, for the most part! And even if one happens, there’s a way back.
What Is a Google Business Profile Suspension?
When your Google Business Profile is suspended, two things can happen: it’s either restricted or completely removed from Google Search and Maps. You’ll usually see a “Suspended” status in your dashboard and, most times, Google also sends an email notification.

Unfortunately, Google rarely explains why your profile was suspended, which often makes resolving the issue feel like guesswork. You’ll see suspensions labeled with very broad and general violations, such as “Policy Violation” or “Deceptive Content.”
There are two types of suspensions:
Soft Suspension
- Your listing still appears on Google and Maps.
- But you can’t manage or edit it until it’s reinstated.
This often happens when Google thinks something about your profile is off—like a suspicious address—but doesn’t believe the business is outright fake.
Hard Suspension
- Your profile is completely removed from Search and Maps.
- Customers can’t find you, even if they search your exact name.
This usually means Google believes your business isn’t eligible to be listed at all. For service-based businesses like HVAC pros, lawyers, or roofers, a hard suspension can cut off the #1 lead source overnight.
Why Google Business Profile Suspensions Happen (Even If You Didn’t Break the Rules)
It’s not always your fault. Anyone can report your listing via the “Suggest an Edit” feature on Google Maps. If enough users—or just one high-trust user—flags your business, Google may suspend it automatically.
Here are the most common triggers:
- Changing key info like your business name, address, or category
- Using a virtual office, PO box, or UPS Store instead of a real physical address
- Having multiple listings for the same business or service area
- Operating in a high-spam industry (like locksmiths, garage repair, or personal injury law)
- Allowing access to a restricted Google account (such as a marketing agency with a history of violations)
Bottom line: Google’s trying to protect its platform from abuse, but real, honest businesses still get caught in the crossfire all the time. In Google’s eyes, sometimes you’re guilty until proven innocent.

How Can I Avoid a Google Business Profile Suspension?
We help our clients protect their profiles every day. Here’s what we recommend:
1. Always use a real address
Avoid PO boxes, coworking spaces, virtual offices and mail centers. If you’re a service-area business, use your home or storefront address and hide it from public view in your settings.
2. Make Changes GRADUALLY
Avoid making multiple edits at once. Updating your name, address and Google Business Profile categories all on the same day can trigger a suspension. Spread them out and triple-check accuracy.
3. Choose Trusted Partners Only
If a digital marketing agency has a suspended Google account—even unrelated to your business—it can affect your profile too. Be picky about who you give access to.
4. Audit Your Access List
Check who has access to your profile. Remove inactive users and ask collaborators to make sure their accounts are in good standing.
5. Don’t Game the System
No GBP spam, such as keyword stuffing, fake addresses, or duplicate listings. These tricks might work short-term, but Google catches on… and suspensions follow!

Got suspended? Here’s how to get back on Google Maps:

Step 1: Check Your Email
Google usually sends a notification. Starting in 2024, these emails include a general reason and a support article. It’s usually pretty vague, but it’s a place to start.
Step 2: Review Google’s Guidelines
Review Google’s Business Profile guidelines line by line, with special attention to your business name, address and categories.
As Google continues to integrate more AI into their systems, they’re able to detect a wider range of violations. This includes not just name, address and category issues, but also promotional content in the business description, inclusion of emails, phone numbers, websites, social media handles, and even text-heavy or duplicate images. Google is now evaluating every aspect of the profile more closely than ever!
Step 3: Check for Restricted Accounts
If a Google account has been flagged, there will be an indicator that the “Google Account is not in good standing”. However, business owners should still make sure anyone on the GBP should/shouldn’t have access.
Step 4: Submit an Appeal
Use Google’s Business Profile Appeals Tool to request reinstatement. Include clear, verifiable documentation:
- Business licenses
- Utility bills
- Photos of signage or your storefront
- Proof of real-world presence
Step 5: Follow Up
Appeals usually take 1 to 3 weeks—sometimes longer—so patience (and persistence) is key. If you don’t hear back, follow up with Google Support and have your reference number ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Google Business Profile suspensions.
Google may suspend your profile if it detects policy violations, suspicious activity, or spam-like behavior. Common triggers include using a PO box or virtual address, changing key info all at once, or being in a high-spam industry like law or home services. Sometimes, even being associated with a suspended Google account (like an agency’s) can cause a suspension.
Reinstatement usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, but can take longer depending on how complex your case is and how complete your documentation is, and Google’s current backlog.
If you received a soft suspension, your listing still appears on Google, but you can’t edit or manage it. If you received a hard suspension, your profile is completely removed from Google Search and Maps, and customers won’t be able to find you.
Start by checking your email from Google for a general reason. Then, carefully review your profile against Google’s guidelines, especially for name, address and category issues. It’s also a good idea to check if any collaborators managing your profile have accounts that were flagged or suspended.
