Why Verifying Your Business on Google Matters

Whether you’re running a family-owned diner in Kansas City or a boutique law firm in New York, verifying your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the first action you should take to start driving more foot traffic and calls.

Why Verifying Your Business on Google Matters

Why? Think of your Google Business Profile (GBP) as your online storefront. Just like a clear and accurate sign outside, you want your online profile to look right. When you verify your profile, Google knows it’s really you running the show, which helps you:

  • Make sure your business info is accurate (things like your address, phone number, and hours of operation).
  • Control who can edit your profile, because you only want those you trust making changes!
  • Help your business show up more in local searches, like when someone types “plumber near me” or “best auto repair in town.”
  • Add important content, such as pictures and the ability to respond to customer reviews.

Now that you know why it matters, let’s walk through each verification method so you can pick the fastest path to full control of your listing.

Google Business Profile Verification Methods

Google offers several ways to complete Google Business Profile verification and depending on your type of business and location, you might have a specific option available.

Google Business Profile Verification Methods

1. Phone or Text Verification

If you’ve got your business phone number handy, this can be the quickest way to verify your profile on Google.

  • Google will send you a text or call you with a special code.
  • All you need to do is enter that code into your Google Business Profile and you’re good to go.

Tip: Note that this method isn’t always an option and is pretty rare to come by. So if Google offers it to you—take it!

2. Email Verification

If your business is set up to use email verification, you’ll get a message in your inbox with instructions.

  • Look for the email from Google, follow the link and enter the code they provide.
  • Just make sure to use the same email address that’s linked to your business.

3. Mail (Postcard) Verification

For some businesses, Google will send a postcard (yes, you read that right) with a verification code to your business address. This classic approach might take a bit longer—usually about 14 days—but is still one of the most reliable methods for Google Business Profile verification.

  • Once you get the postcard, just enter the code into your profile and you’re done!

Tips:

  • While you’re waiting for the postcard, avoid making changes to your business info (like your name or address). If you do, Google will cancel the code and send a new one… which means more waiting.
  • As the mailer does somehow look like junk mail, be cautious with tossing ads and spam mail in the trash.

4. Google Business Profile Video Verification or Live Video Call

This might sound a little fancy, but Google Business Profile video verification is just another way to confirm your business. Google may ask you to hop on a video call or send a video of your business showing things like:

  • The outside of your business (like your storefront sign).
  • The tools you use for work (like equipment or marketing materials).
  • Proof that you manage the place (like unlocking the front door or showing the register).

Note that what’s requested might slightly differ depending on whether you have a storefront or are a service area business.

How Long Does Google Business Profile Verification Take

A common question we get is, “How long does Google Business Profile verification take?” The timeline depends on your chosen method:

  • Instant methods (phone/email): Several minutes to a few hours.
  • Postcard verification: 5–14 days on average, subject to local postal service speed.
  • Video verification: Typically 2–5 business days, depending on Google’s support queue.

Once you’ve submitted your verification request, Google will begin processing it. During this time, your profile will be in what’s called a “pending state”. You won’t be able to make edits to certain information until the verification is complete.

If verification extends beyond these windows, Google may pause (“suspend”) your profile while re-validating, especially for new or service-area listings. Google is treating this as a verification measure to make sure businesses are compliant with their policies.

After processing, Google will either verify your profile or request a different method of verification. If Google asks for further steps, don’t worry—just follow the new instructions to complete the process.

Waiting can be frustrating… But remember, once Google verifies you, you unlock the full power of your profile!

What Happens After You’re Verified?

Once you’re verified, you’re all set to manage your profile!

A few things to keep in mind:

  • It might take a couple of weeks for your updated info to show up across Google.
  • You can start adding more details to your profile, like your services, special offers and photos/videos of your work.
  • Major updates—like address changes—may trigger re-verification, so plan any business moves accordingly.
